THIS morning, November 5, Filipinos rejoice because Teresita Ssen Marquez (aka Winwyn Marquez) won in Reina Hispanoamericana 2017 held in Bolivia.
Winwyn Marquez is the first Filipino woman won in the said pageant. Also, the Philippines is the only country in Asia that participates in this Spanish-Latino pageant.
Most judges agree that she’s deserving for this crown because of her wits in Q&A portion. For the question-and-answer portion, Winwyn was asked: “How would you promote Hispanic-American culture with the great difficulty or barrier of language?” With the help of an interpreter, she answered: “Language can be learned. But the will and determination to contribute something to the organization cannot. It has to come from the heart and it has to be natural. I believe that kindness is the universal language. If you treat people with tolerance, patience and love, you will understand each other. The Hispanic culture is not about language only. It is about love for God, love for country, love for history and culture, and love for family.
“And as a Filipina with a unique heritage, I have instilled that. I am ready to promote the Hispanic culture not just in Asia but in the whole world. It is time to celebrate the Hispanic culture. It is meant to be celebrated. Gracias.”
Aside from the title, she also won several special awards. Marquez finished in the top 3 in the Traditional Costume category. She wore a golden warrior outfit, created by Edwin Uy who said that he drew inspiration from the Pintados tribe of Cebu. She won first runner-up in the Miss Personality category. She was likewise a finalist in the Best Smile and Miss Silhouette categories, and was named the Ipanema Girl.
The other countries that won awards were: Miss Bolivia (4th runner-up), Miss Mexico (3rd runner-up), Miss Venezuela (2nd runner-up), and Miss Brazil (1st runner-up).
