Johnrey RivasAFTER the successful Mindanao tour, the cast of Obra ni Juan are back in Manila. According to the organizers of Philippine Stagers Foundation, the musical play is once again on tour around Metro Manila.

The play was written and directed by Atty. Vince Tañada. The play is based on the life and achievements of Juan Luna. Obra ni Juan was top billed by Atty. Vincent Tañada and Patrick Libao, and they both play as Juan LunaAlso starring in this play is Johnrey Rivas who plays a role as Jose Rizal.

Last week, Johnrey told me about his career as a theater actor. I asked him about his favorite character he portrayed. “So far, si Pepe [Jose Rizal] ng Obra ni Juan, kase ito yung pinaka big break ko .” he said.

Aside from Jose Rizal, he portrayed several characters for more than five years in this industry, including a Martial Law victim named Art in Katips, Achilles’ bestfriend Patroculus in Troy Ave, a war orphaned teen-guerrilla named Pancho in Filipinas 1941, and more.

I asked him about his dream role: “Ewan ko. I have a fascination when it comes to fantasy play. Gusto ko talaga maging isang Prince or King. Pero kung Broadway, syempre si Thuy ng Miss Saigon, or Fierro ng Wicked.” he said.

Even though he’s very successful in his career, he’s still never forget the people who appreciates him on stage: “Ngayon na marami po akong mga fans o tawagin nating nai-inspire. Lubusan po akong Nagpapasalamat kase ibig sabihin pala epektibo ‘yung pagganap ko sa bawat mga karakter na ginagampanan ko. Hindi ko man sila maisa isa dahil sa daming PM/DM sa mga social media account ko. Mahal ko sila. Isa sila sa mga dahilan kung bakit ako patuloy na nag tatanghal. To inspire them, to educate them, or possibly to change their lives in good way.”
