THE “P” TALKS!
BY: Pilar Mateo
IF she’s not singing on the top of her lungs, memorizing her lines, checking on the duties to her beloved husband and daughter, the internationally acclaimed artist that is Lea Salonga can be seen undisturbed playing her favorite games on her Xbox.
So as not to miss the updates on her games she has an Xbox at home here in the Philippines and in New York as well.
Jetting in and out of the country, she just can’t get used to the lags from the zones wherever she comes from.
Lea shared that she also had her share of rejections in the past as a budding theater actress.
“It was my cousin Ria who got me into where I am now. She’s a niece of Baby Barredo, the founder of Repertory Philippines. She told me to audition for “The King and I“. Parang may family connection na rin. I went. A little girl who was not intimidated by the Tita Bibot Amador. And that was something I didn’t know I would follow someday.
“So, getting cast on ‘Miss Saigon’ both in London and New York was something very special. Now, it’s pay back time. Giving back to the Universe. So, I’ve had my share of perfect ten moments in my life.
“My daughter Nicole will be in the concert. She loves what she does. She did ‘Matilda’. And she worked hard to prepare for it. I wanted her to go through the experience. That it’s not a walk in the park.
“Esang (de Torres) was on my Team in “The Voice”. She did “Matilda” as well. She’s growing up to be a beautiful young lady.
“Tanya (Manalang), I came to know later on was my neighbor pala. Her house and my house where I used to live magka-back-to-back. Kaya pala, I could hear a young woman singing when they would have parties and visitors. Not a bad thing.
“Michael (K. Lee) naman has been my leading man for three times na. We interact really well. We talk about the future, family, work. Our friendship stays over the years.
“I don’t have a tentative song list yet. The line-up has not been worked and loaded on yet. We had to come up with one. It’s Gerard’s turn. Which frustrates my Mom (Ligaya) a lot. It will be an even mix of everything.”
The budding artists on her list.
“I haven’t listened to everybody. Kyla Rivera. Gab Pangilinan. Iba ang energy. Arman Flores. David Ezra. Joaquin Valdez. I dunno what the future holds for this guy.”
Looking forward with “Yellow Rose” to reach Philippine shores.
“Ah, you have to see Princess Punzalan. She is soooo so good! I hope it gets shown here.”
And she will be back with the new kids on the block on “The Voice Kids” (Season 4) and the most awaited “Sweeney Todd” with Jett Pangan.
“It’s not that I don’t get attached to the kids. But you kinda know how the game is played. It’s emotional. Gut-wrenching. Heart wrenching! Sarah (Geronimo) has to beg off. I respect naman Sharon (Cuneta) to beg off. It’s hard not to get emotional. But you should be open to it, too. It’s play to win for me. Si Bamboo is very competitive.
Very hands on. It is what it is. Am a Mom. It’s your approach with the kids.”
The media had a breeze talking to the country’s premier theater actress at Resort World Manila’s Wolfgang Steakhouse to share about her two nights of enchanting music at the award-winning Newport Performing Arts Theater (NPAT) on August 30 and 31, 8 p.m. to celebrate RWMs 10th Anniversary in “Perfect Ten”.
RWM, the country’s pioneering integrated resort that offers a wide array of lifestyle and entertainment alternative for its guests, welcomes back Lea after the star was named as the integrated resort’s featured performer in its first Grand Fiesta Manila celebrations during its maiden year in 2009. From then on, Lea has made several performances at the NPAT and at the Marriott Grand Ballroom, particularly as a headliner for the Grand Countdown to 2017 party. Together with her special guests, Lea promises a back-to-back performance that will wow theater enthusiasts and music fans alike.
Listing a repertoire of Broadway and West End hits, along with unforgettable theme songs from our favorite movies and the best of OPM, Lea channels her stellar talent to define a journey that spans a decade of thrills that only RWM can deliver.
Joining the theater royalty onstage are her handpicked guests for “Perfect Ten” which includes Esang de Torres, Nicole Chien (her daughter) and stage actress Tanya Manalang who will each get a chance to shine with Lea in featured duets. Another star audiences should watch out for in “Perfect Ten” is singer, stage actor, and writer Michael K. Lee, who starred alongside Lea in “Miss Saigon”, and more recently in “Allegiance”. The versatile artist in Lee has landed him notable roles in musicals “Pacific Overtures”, “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “Rent” among others.
